QuestionAnswer
What is the definition of ethics? The way people behave based on commonly held core values.
What are the 3R's? Replacement-can animals be replaced with nonanimal alternatives or lower sentient species? Reduction-can fewer animals be used? Refinement-can procedures be refined to lessen pain and distress or minimize the number of potentially painful procedures?
How is the humane endpoint defined? The point at which pain or distress in an experimental animal is prevented, terminated or relieved.
Rules governing animal research come from? Federal laws, regulations and guidelines
What are the steps for making an ethical decision? Identify the issue, gather and assess all facts, identify the staff affected by the issue, identify values that play role in decision, identify and evaluate solutions, decide on a course of action
What should you look at if there is a question around how an animal is being treated? Ensure the protocol, regulatory mandates and institutional policies are being followed
