Nutrients

TermDefinition
Carbohydrates The Body's main source of energy.
Simple Carbohydrates They are high in calories and low in nutritional value.
Complex Carbohydrates "Good for you because they are rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber. Excellent source of energy
Proteins Class of nutrients made up of amino acids. They help build, maintain, and repair body tissues. (Can also supply energy).
Complete Proteins Has everything you need in it, contains all 9 essential amino acids
Incomplete Proteins Doesn't have everything you need in it, lacks one or more of the essential amino acids.
Fats "Protection(cushioning), insulation & a reserve energy supply . Enhance the taste and texture of food. Required to carry “fat-soluble” vitamins throughout the body.
Saturated Fats "Solid at room temperature. Linked to high cholesterol and increased risk of heart disease.
Unsaturated Fats Healthy for you. Liquid at room temperature
Vitamins "Help regulate the many chemical processes in the body. Helps you body systems work properly (respiration, circulation etc).There are 13 different vitamins known to be required each day for good health. Do not give you Energy.
Minerals A class of nutrients that are chemical elements, which are needed for enzyme activity, bone formation and other processes of the body. Do not give you energy.
Iron A mineral that is needed to make hemoglobin. Helps the blood do its job better. Blood takes oxygen and other nutrients around to all parts of the body. If you do not have enough, your blood gets weak and cannot work well.
Calcium This mineral helps build bones & teeth. (Too little leads to disease -Osteoporosis "Brittle Bone Disease")
Sodium A mineral that controls the fluid levels in the body. Needed in small amounts. Another word for salt.
Water Aids in proper digestion and cell growth. It carries nutrients to your cells and carries waste from your body. Regulates body temperature.
Fiber Keep digestive tract moving (helps you poo). Scrubs & cleans the digestive tract preventing diseases like cancer. Soaks up cholesterol so reduces the chance of heart attack
