Elements and Principles of Design

QuestionAnswer
What are the elements of design? Line, form/shape, texture, color, space.
What are the principles of design? Balance, rhythm, proportion/scale, emphasis, unity.
What is the principle repetition? Design is copied or repeated.
How does texture affect color? Smooth textures look brighter and more intense because they reflect light; rough textures look darker and duller because they absorb light.
What do curved lines suggest? Coziness, comfort, naturalness, delicateness.
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? Left and right parts are equal in horizontal balance. In vertical balance, top and bottom parts are equal. Elements radiate out from design in radial balance.
What do diagonal lines suggest? Movement, activity, excitement.
What is space? The actual room or building you are designing- describes ceiling heights, windows, doorways, size, etc.
What are the four types of rhythm? Gradation, radiation, repetition, continuous line.
What is asymmetrical balance? Example? Parts of the design are not identical but equal in visual weight. Example- 2 small pictures on one side and one medium- sized picture on the other side.
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? Horizontal lines go left and right. Vertical lines go up and down.
What is the golden mean? 3 to 5 ratio.
What is the difference between shape and form? Form is the 3D look of an object when shape is the 2D look.
What are the five types of balance? Symmetrical, asymmetrical, vertical, horizontal, radial.
What does unity or harmony mean? All elements and principles of design work together to create harmony.
What are the two things texture involves? How a surface feels to your touch and how it looks like if you can feel it.
What are the four types of line? Vertical, horizontal, diagonal, curved.
What is proportion? Each of the parts are the right size to belong to the whole.
Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? Radial.
What is symmetrical balance? Example? When both parts of a design are identical on either side. Example- a butterfly.
What is emphasis? What is another name for it? The focal point of a design, where one item or object stands out.
What happens when you use a continuous line? Your eye follows around the room where that line goes.
What is another name for symmetrical balance? Formal balance.
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? Informal balance.
What is the difference between gradation and radiation? Gradation is the gradual increase or decrease in size in a design
