Elements and Principles of Design
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What are the elements of design? | line, form/shape, texture, color, space |
What are the principles of design? | balance, rhythm, proportion/scale, emphasis, unity |
What is the principle repetition? | design is copied or repeated |
How does texture affect color? | Smooth textures reflect light and look brighter, shiner, and more intense. Rough textures adsorb more light and look darker and duller. |
What do curved lines suggest? | coziness, comfort, naturalness, delicateness |
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? | Vertical - top and bottom parts equal Horizontal - left and right parts are equal Radial - elements radiate out from design |
What do diagonal lines suggest? | movement, activity, excitement |
What is space? | basic structure of the room, walls, floors, ceilings, windows |
What are the four types of rhythm? | gradation, radiation, repetition, continuous line |
What is asymmetrical balance? Example? | parts of the design are not identical but are equal in visual weight ex.) one large pillow at one end of the sofa, three small pillows on the other end |
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? | horizontal lines lead the eye from left to right or vice versa but vertical lines lead the eye up or down |
What is the golden mean? | 3 to 5, creates pleasing, natural looking compositions, ideal ratio |
What is the difference between shape and form? | shape refers to 2-D (square) while form refers to 3-D (cube) |
What are the five types of balance? | symmetrical, asymmetrical, vertical, horizontal, radial |
What does unity or harmony mean? | all elements and principles of design work together to create harmony |
What are the two things texture involves? | Tactile and visual |
What are the four types of line? | vertical, horizontal, diagonal, curved |
What is proportion? | each of the parts are the right size to belong to the whole |
Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? | asymmetrical |
What is symmetrical balance? Example? | when both parts are identical ex.) plants, insects, humans |
What is emphasis? What is another name for it? | one object or item stands out, focal point |
What happens when you use a continuous line? | creates a continuous line for the eyes to follow |
What is another name for symmetrical balance? | formal balance |
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? | informal balance |
What is the difference between gradation and radiation? | gradation - designs increase or decrease in size, one element of design changes radiation - lines or designs move out from center point |
