Elements/Principles of Design
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What are the elements of design? | space, line, shape, texture, form and color |
What are the principles of design? | balance, rhythm,proportion/scale,emphasis, unity |
What is the principle repetition? | rhythm (def:when a design is copied or repeated ) |
How does texture affect color? | Rough surfaces absorb light. Smooth surfaces reflect more light that rough surfaces. |
What do curved lines suggest? | soft and calm effects |
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? | Horizontal balance is when left and right parts are equal. Vertical balance is when top and bottom parts are equal. Radial balance is when elements radiate out from design. |
What do diagonal lines suggest? | movement and excitement |
What is space? | a specific area |
What are the four types of rhythm? | gradation, radiation, repetition, continuous line |
What is asymmetrical balance? Example? | Parts of the design are not identical but are equal in visual weight. An example is a couch with two chairs front of it. |
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? | Vertical lines go up and down and horizontal lines go left to right. |
What is the golden mean? | the 3 to 5 ratio |
What is the difference between shape and form? | form is 3-D when shape is 2-D |
What are the five types of balance? | formal balance, informal balance, vertical balance, horizontal balance, radial balance |
What does unity or harmony mean? | all elements and principles of design work together to create harmony |
What are the two things texture involves? | it involves the way a surface feels or looks like how it feels. |
What are the four types of line? | horizontal, vertical, curved, diagnol |
What is proportion? | how a picture is divided |
Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? | diagonal |
What is symmetrical balance? Example? | when both parts of a design is equal (butterfly) |
What is emphasis? What is another name for it? | An object that stands out or your eye goes there first (focal point) |
What happens when you use a continuous line? | your eyes continues the line |
What is another name for symmetrical balance? | formal balance |
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? | informal balance |
What is the difference between gradation and radiation? | Gradation increases or decreases in size fades like a ombre. In radiations lines move out from a center point. |
