Theme | Notes |
---|---|
Secrecy, silence and hidden behaviours | Whole plot centres on Jekyll's secret. Jekyll reclusive & requests privacy. Most not revealed until the final chapter. Many things aren't talked about because of gentlemanly behaviour. |
Importance of reputation and respectability | Victorian society expected gentlemen to have a good reputation. Based on appearances. Undesirable behaviour hidden - visits to inns/prostitutes at night. Utterson most concerned about Jekyll's reputation. |
Duality (2 sides to things) and contrasts | Cavendish Square/Soho. Rich/poor. Science/religion. Jekyll's quarters/laboratory. Public respectability/private vices. Virtue/sin. Jekyll/Hyde's physical appearance. Jekyll believes there are two sides to every individual. |
Religion vs science | Christian society. Lanyon sees science & religion as separate. Jekyll combines them 'mystic'. Origin of the species - man's evolution from apes. Science seen as dangerous as it challenged biblical views. |
'The beast in man' - animal passions and instincts within man | Hyde and his actions frequently described in animal-like terms. Lack of control & moral conscience. |
Violence on innocents | Little girl trampled by Hyde. Carew's murder. |
Urban Terror | Rapid growth in crime in Victorian London. Links to Jack the Ripper (although he came later). |
