Elements and Principles of Design

QuestionAnswer
What are the elements of design? Space, Line, Shape/Form, Texture, and Color
What are the principles of design? Proportion/Scale, Balance, Emphasis, Rhythm, and Harmony
What is the principle repetition? Repeating color, lines, form, or texture
How does texture affect color? Smooth surfaces reflect more light, making it brighter; where as rough surfaces absorb the light, making them appear darker
What do curved lines suggest? Soft, graceful effect to designs
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? Horizontal balance is the same on the left and the right. Vertical balance is the same on the top and the bottom. Radial balance is when the elements radiate out from a center point.
What do diagonal lines suggest? Action, movement, and excitment
What is space? The area provided for a particular purpose
What are the four types of rhythm? Gradation, Radiation, Repetition, and Continuous
What is asymmetrical balance? (Provide and example) When the design is not equal on both sides but has the same visual weight. Ex. A person holding a pineapple in one hand and three oranges in the other.
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? Horizontal lines are from the left to the right, while vertical lines go up and down
What is the golden mean? A 3:5 ratio
What is the difference between shape and form? Shape is a flat image (2D) while form is a 3 dimensional object having mass and volume
What are the five types of balance? Asymmetrical, Symmetrical, Vertical, Horizontal, and Radial
What does unity/harmony mean? How the elements and principles of design work together to create a harmonious feel
What are the two things texture involves? How an object feels (its hand) and how the object appears to feel
What are the four types of line? Vertical, Horizontal, Diagonal, and Curved
What is proportion? The ratio of one part to another part OR one part to the whole
Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? Asymmetrical or Informal
What is symmetrical balance (Provide and example) When design is completely equal on both sides. Ex. Butterfly
What is emphasis? What is another name for it? It is the focus of a room, the center of attention aka the focal point
What happens when you see continuous line? Your eye will follow the line whichever way it goes
What is another name for symmetrical balance? Formal Balance
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? Informal Balance
What is the difference between gradation and radiation? Gradation is how an object or color slowly increases/decreases in size and/or color, while radiation is how an object radiates out from a center point
