QuestionAnswer
Describe the Differences between the sufaces of inner planets versus Outer Planets? Inner planets have rocky surfaces Outer planets are much larger and are gas Giants
How does the mass of Charon compare to Plutos and Earth's masses? Charon and Plutos have solid surfaces and masses much less than Earth.
What is a meteor? A chunk of rock or dust in space. A streak of light in the sky produces by the burning of a merioroid in Earths atmosphere
How is a meteor different from comet? A meteor is chunk of rock or dust in space. A comets are large chunks of ice and dust like a dirty snowball.
What is a Heliocentric System? A description of the solar system in which all of the planets revolve around the sun
What is a geocentric System? A description of the solar system in which all the planets revolve around the Earth
Which famous astronomer explained that the Sun is the center of the system of Planets (solar system)? Nicholas Copernicus
How did Galileo help the heiocentric system gain support? He saw four moons revolving around Jupiter and that Venus' moon went through phases similar to Earth and therefore Earth could not be at the center of the system of planets
What two factors combine to keep the planets in orbit around the Sun? Inertia and Gravity
Which term refers to the tendency of a moving object to continue moving in a straight line or a stationary object to remain in place Inertia
Scientist believe there is enough fuel in the sun to last for about how many more years? 5 billion more years
What layer of the Sun are you looking at when you look at a photograph of the sun? Photosphere
What is the solar wind and which layer of the Sun produces it? Solar wind is produced by the Corona layer of the sun and send out a stream of electrically charged particles called solar wind
How do sunspots on the sun compare to the area around them? They are cooler than the gases around them
What is a solar prominence? Reddish loops of gas that link different parts of sunspot regions
What solar feature can increase the solar wind, sometimes causing electrical power problems on Earth? Solar Flares
What characteristics do all the inner planets have in common Surface is hot enough to melt lead. The atmosphere is almost entirely leaked away. Are small and have rocky surfaces
What characteristic makes Earth unique among the other planets in the solar system No other planet has Oceans
In what ways are Venus and Earth alike Similar in Size. Density and internal structure are the same.
In what ways are Venus and Earth different? Venus temperature is hotter and has no water or life
Explain why the atmospheres of the outer planets cannot escape into space? Because they have so much mass and exert stronger gravity
What characteristics do the outer planets have in common? They are gas giants Have large atospheres - more mass and gravity and have solid cores
What are Saturn's rings composed of? Ice and Rock
How is Uranus different than most other planets Rotates on a tilted axis
Which planet has 4 moons named Europa, Callisto, Ganymede, and lo? Jupiter
What shape are the orbits of comets seen from Earth? eclipses
Where is the asteroid belt located? Between Mars and Jupiter
