Question | Answer |
---|---|
What are the elements of design? | Space, line, shape, form, texture and color |
What are the principles of design? | Balance, Rhythm, proportion/scale, emphasis, unity |
What is the principle repetition? | Design is copied or repeated, a pattern carried throughout the design |
How does texture affect color? | Smooth surfaces reflect more light than rough surfaces which makes them brighter. Rough surfaces absorb more light which makes them look darker |
What do curved lines suggest? | Adds a soft and graceful effect to designs |
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? | Vertical is the top and bottom parts are equal. Horizontal is the left and right parts are equal. Radical is the elements radiate out from the design |
What do diagonal lines suggest? | Suggest action, movement and excitement |
What is space? | The area provided for a particular purpose. Can have 2 or 3 dimensions |
What are the four types of rhythm? | Gradation, repetition, radiation, continuous line |
What is asymmetrical balance? Example? | Parts of the design are not identical but are equal in visual weight. An example is a particular room. |
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? | Vertical lines lead the eye up and the room appears taller. Horizontal lines lead the eye from left to right and the room appears wider and shorter. |
What is the golden mean? | A 3 to 5 ratio for proportion/scale |
What is the difference between shape and form? | Shape can have both 2 and 3 dimensions. Form can only have 3 dimensions |
What are the five types of balance? | Asymmetrical, symmetrical, vertical, horizontal and radial |
What does unity or harmony mean? | All the elements and principles of design are working together to create harmony |
What are the two things texture involves? | Involves how the surface feels to the touch and how it appears to feel |
What are the four types of line? | Vertical, horizontal, diagonal, curved |
What is proportion? | How the design is visually divided |
Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? | Asymmetrical |
What is symmetrical balance? Example? | When both parts are identical |
What is emphasis? What is another name for it? | How one object or item stands out, has a focal point in the design |
What happens when you use a continuous line? | Design creates a continuous line for eye to follow |
What is another name for symmetrical balance? | Formal balance |
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? | Informal balance |
What is the difference between gradation and radiation? | In gradation one element of design changes (designs increase or decrease in size, color lightens and darkens). In radiation lines or designs radiate from a central point |
