Term | Definition |

Litigants | A person involved in a lawsuit. |
Supreme Court | The highest judicial court in a country or state. |
Due Process | The government must act fairly and in accord with established rules in all that it does. |
Jury Duty | Obligation of a citizen to serve on jury when called. |
Bill of Rights | The first ten amendments to the constitution. |
Congress | The national legislative body of a country. |
Ultimate Source of Political Power | The people. |
Double Jeopardy | part of the 5th amendment which says that no person can be put in jeopardy of life or limb twice. Once a person has been tried for a crime, he or she cannot be tried again for the same crime. |
Refugees | One who leaves his or her home to seek protections from war, persecution,or some other danger. |
Amendments | A change in, or addition to, a constitution or law. |
Mayflower Compact | An agreement reached by the pilgrims on the ship the mayflower in 1620, mayflower compact bound theme to live in a civil society according to their own laws. |
Magna Carta | Great charter forced upon king John of England by his barons in 1215; established that the power of the monarchy was not absolute and guaranteed trial by jury and due process of law to the nobility. |
James Madison | Member of the Continental Congress. A leader in the drafting of the constitution. Served as president from 1809-1817 |
Electoral College | Group of persons chosen in each state and the district of Columbia every four years who make a formal selection of the president and vice president. |
Qualifications for Senators | Has to be at lest 30 years old, U.S. citizenship has to be at least 9 years, and residency in the state a senator represents at time of election. |
Qualifications for President | Only a U.S. citizen is eligible to be president. Has to be at least age 35 five to be president. |
Social Security | Any government system that provides assistance to people with an inadequate or no income. |
Segregation | The separation of one group from another. |
Main source of government revenue | Federal tax. |
Marbury v. Madison | Was a landmark United States Supreme Court case in which the court formed the basis for the exercise of judicial review in the United States under article III of the constitution. |
Checks and Balances | system of overlapping the powers of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches to permit each branch to check the actions of the others. |
Federalist and Anti-Federalists | Those persons who supported the ratification of the constitution. Those persons who opposed the ratification of the constitution. |
Concurrent Power | Those powers that both national Government and the states possess and exercise. |
Senators v. House of Representatives | Member of senate. The lower legislation house of the United States Congress. |
Federalism | A system of government in which a written constitution divides power between a central, or national, government and several regional governments. |
