4 Reasons Children Misbehave | 1. needs are not being met 2. uncomfortable environment 3. they don't know better 4. it's their stage of growth |
Guidance | an ongoing system of strategies to help children learn to manage impulses, express feelings, channel frustrations, solve problems, and learn the difference between acceptable and unacceptable behavior. |
Discipline | the ability to follow an example or follow rules, the development of self control or control in general such as by imposing order on a group. |
Punishment | a consequence for inappropriate behavior. To be effective, punishment should be related to the behavior and help children learn from the situation. |
Direct Guidance | methods used while interacting with children |
Indirect Guidance | creating conditions that promote that optimal behavior through the intentional use of the environment and overall classroom climate |
Negative reinforcement | response to a behavior that decreased the likelihood that the behavior will reoccur. |
Positive reinforcement | a response to a behavior that increases the likelihood that the behavior will be repeated or increased. |
Redirecting | reverting a child's attention to a new activity |
6 steps to conflict resolution | 1. approach calmly, stopping any hurtful actions 2. Acknowledge children's feelings 3. Gather information 4. restate the problem 5. ask for ideas for solutions and choose one together 6. Be prepared to give follow up support |
Reverse Attention | Recognizing the good behavior a child is doing instead of the inappropriate behavior |
limits/choices for desired outcome | limits: the absolute controls an adult puts on children's behavior. choices: helps children maintain some control over the situation as well as practice self-direction and self-control. |
effective directions | give directions one at a time |
Natural Consequences | the real-life outcomes of a child's own actions. |
Logical Consequences | consequences that adults impose upon a child's actions |
Time Out | removing a child from the play area when, owing to anger, hurt, or frustration, the child is out of control. It is a brief respite and a chance to stop all activity and regroup. |
