TermDefinition
Proof of residency A document such as a passport, Social Security card, or birth certificate to show that you live in the United States
W-4 form A form that provides employers the information they need to calculate how much money to withhold from your paycheck to pay taxes
Probation A period of time that varies from company to company during which you and your employer have the chance to make sure you are the right fit for the job
Labor union or guild An organization of people within a company who pay a fee to belong and who work together to ensure fair treatment of its members.
Small business A business that is privately owned and operated in which any employee may wear more than one hat (responsibility)
Professionalism The ability to show respect to everyone around you while you perform your responsibilities. You earn respect of supervisor, trust of co-workers, and contribute to your own well-being.
Teamwork Working with others by actively listening, cooperating, compromising if necessary, and completing tasks on time to best of your ability.
Stress Caused by how you feel about your work
Conflict Disagreement between two or more people who have different ideas which can affect how you perform your tasks
Resolve workplace conflict Focus on common goals
Work ethics Beliefs and behaviors about what is right and wrong in a work environment
Americans with Disabilities Act A law that makes it illegal to discriminate based on age or physical disability
Reporting Unethical Behavioral You need to use your decision-making skills to decide how to respond.
Peer pressure Pressure by co-workers to do something -- either positive or negative
Accomplish Career Goals Manage time effectively and set priorities
Manage Workplace Conflict Ability to recognize what is causing the conflict

How can you earn respect and support of co-workers? Show appreciation, take responsibility
Discrimination Unfair treatment of a person or group based on age, gender, race, or relegation.
Harassment Unwanted, repeated behavior or communication that bothers, annoys, frightens, or stresses another person.
If you believe you are facing discrimination or harassment at work, what should you do? Keep a written record, get copy of company policy, follow company procedure, report to EEOC
Examples of harassment Comment on appearance, tell inappropriate jokes, touching a co-worker, hanging up inappropriate pictures, asking a co-worker on a date after he or she has said no, using crude or inappropriate language
