Missouri Compromise Agreement made to keep the balance of slave and free states equal. Missouri was added as a slave state and Maine added as a free state in 1821.
abolition The action or an act of abolishing a system, practice, or institution.
Wilmont Proviso designed to eliminate slavery within the land acquired as a result of the Mexican War (1846-48)
California Gold Rush began when gold was found in Sutter's Mill in California by James W. Marshall
Compromise of 1850 was a package of five separate bills passed by the United States Congress in September 1850, which defused a four-year political confrontation between slave and free states regarding the status of territories acquired during the Mexican–American War
underground railroad A network of houses and other places that abolitionists used to help slaves escape to freedom in the northern states or in Canada before the Civil War.
