Popular Sovereingity | The Government can only govern with the consent of the governed. AKA: POWER TO THE PEOPLE |
Limited Government | No government is all-powerful. The government can only do things that the people want it to. |
Constitutionalism | The government can only and MUST only be conducted to the constitutional's principles |
Rule of law | NO ruler is above the law |
Seperation of powers | 3 branches of government are single, COEQUAL branches of government. This inforces what the Framers wanted; to have a strong central government, and to limit the powers of the government. |
Checks and balances | Each branch has certian powers and can check what the other 2 branches are doing. |
Veto | The president can reject and law or act of congress. However, congress can override the president's veto by 2/3 vote in each house. |
Judicial review | The power of court to determine the constitutionality of a governmental action. |
Unconstitutional | Judicial review can declare a govermental action unconstitutional. |
Federalism | The division of power among a central government and several regional governments. |
Amendment | A change or an addation to the constitution or a law. |
Ratification | offaicalized to the effectiveness of a constitution, constitutional amendment, or treaty. |
Formal amendment | Change or an addation that becomes part of the written language of the constitution |
Bill of rights | The first 10 amendments |
Executive agreement | A pact made by the President directly with the head of foreign state. |
Treaty | A formal agreement between two or more sovereign states. |
Electoral college | The body that makes the formal selection of the nations president. Each states popular vote in presidential elections. |
Cabinet | presidential advisory body, trdationally made up of the heads of the executive departments and other officers. |
Senatorial courtesy | Senate will not approve a presidential appointment opposed by a majority party senator from the State in which the appointee would serve. |
