Domestic Policy Making
Term | Definition |

Domestic Policy | the policy our government enacts that has a direct impact on our country. |
LBJ's "War on Crime" | LBJ's massive effort to crack down on crime and did so by funding crime agencies massively. |
Gun control | regulations that effect the way people are allowed to use firearms. |
Federal spending on crime initiatives (officers, prisons) | Increased majorly when LBJ launched his war on crime. Continues to be high since, and consistently in the mid to high billions on the budget. |
Harsher punishments (federal crimes) | Crimes that violate a federal law and usually result in a harsher consequence. You can obey state laws and still violate a federal law. (i.e. legal marijuana.) |
Three strikes law | Law for felons who have committed two felons prior and results in a harsh punishment. |
"War on Drugs" | Launched by Richard Nixon to fight drugs. Spent a lot of money on resources and went after sellers, buyers, smugglers, and manufacturers. |
Brown V. Board of Education | as a landmark United States Supreme Court case in which the Court declared state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional |
State Government's role | The state pretty much does all the work when it comes to education. It sets out the budget and the policies as far as curriculums and what is expected from schools in the state. |
Elementary and Secondary Education Act (1965) | the bill aimed to shorten the achievement gaps between students by providing each child with fair and equal opportunities to achieve an exceptional education. |
Department of Education | The department in the cabinet of the executive branch. Basically is just an oversight of what the states are doing. Does not do much for education. |
School Vouchers | a government-funded voucher redeemable for tuition fees at a school other than the public school that a student could attend free. |
No Child Left Behind | Created under George Bush Jr. Supported standards-based education reform, and required states to develop assessments in basic skills. To receive federal school funding, states had to give these assessments to all students at select grade levels. |
