Term | Definition |

AVOD | Ad-Based Video on Demand. A business model where the content is provided at no cost to the consumer who is then exposed to advertising. |
CPM | Cost Per Thousand Impressions. Advertining term where advertisers pay each time an ad is displayed. CPI is the cost incurred for each potential customer who views the ad while CPM refers to the cost or expense incurred for every thousand views. |
MVPD | Multi-Channel Video Programming Distributor. A service provider delivering video programming services over more than one channel, such as direct-broadcast satellite, cable television, and various other wireline video providers such as U-verse. |
ROI | Return on Investment. A performance measure that evaluates the efficiency of an investment measuring the return on that investment relative to the investment’s cost. |
RTB | Real Time Bidding. This is a means by which advertising inventory is bought and sold on a per-impression bases via programmatic, instantaneous auction similar to financial markets. |
SVOD | Subscription Video on Demand. A business model where subscribers are charged a recurring fee to access content. |
TVOD | Transactional Video on Demand. A business model where consumers purchase content on a pay per view basis. There are two sub-categories. Electronic Sell Through – allowing permanent access, and Download to Rent – allowing limited time access. |
UGC | User Generated Content. Any form of media content that was created by users of an online system or service, often made available through social media websites. It is also sometimes referred to as user-created content (UCC). |
5G | Next gen wireless network. Encompasses all networks, uses licensed & unlicensed spectrum; uses frequencies up to 68 gigahertz; changes the network architecture using cloud and virtualization to make it more efficient; higher speeds at lower costs |
Addressability | Having the ability to target the right ad to the right consumer at the right time on the right device and under the right circumstances - deliberately calibrated to produce the highest possible rate of positive response to the ad(s) presented. |
Aggregators | Those who draw video content from multiple content creators bringing it together in one place or one platform. This often involves organizing the content in some way for easier reference, up to and including branding. |
Automation | In the digital space it refers to taking repetitive or time consuming tasks and turning them over to a software based utility which can perform the tasks at great speed and without error. |
Brand | Any name, design, style, words or symbols used singularly or in combination that distinguish one product from another in the eyes of the consumer. |
Content Creators | Those who create digital content. Creators range from high end, premium developers with sophisticated production value to low end, low budget developers with rudimentary production value. |
Data Driven | Data aggregation of viewer habits, needs, preferences, etc. is systemically enabled and decision making is then structured around and driven by the massive aggregation of that data. |
Distributors | Those who make aggregated video content available to the end consumer |
Fixed Price/Fixed Volume | Describes a revenue structure which provides a level of certainty by locking in a determined price for a defined volume. |
Fiber | Also known as Fiber-Optic Internet it uses fiber-optic technology to deliver content at very high speeds. |
Impression | The display of an ad to a user while viewing a web page. A single web page may contain multiple ads. In such cases, a single pageview would result in one impression for each ad displayed. |
Monetization | Converting or establishing something into legal tender. Such as charging fees for what used to be free, or finding ways to make money on something that previously had no value. Data monetization converts information assets into economic value. |
Premium Content | Video content that is produced with high end production value and branded in a way that the consumer recognizes and trusts. |
Social Graph | In the internet context it is a graphic depiction of a social network. It has been referred to as the “global mapping of everybody and how they’re related.” The formal Social Graph was developed and is owned by Facebook, but other social graphing exists. |
Vertical Services (Structure) | In the case of the video entertainment industry, refers to the integration of the content creation, aggregation and distribution functions under one roof to create a single, synergistically managed enterprise. |
