| Herbivore | consumer that eats only plants |
| Omnivore | consumer that eats both plants and animals |
| Hibernation | an inactive state of the body for an extended period of time |
| Scavenger | animal that eats only dead plants and animals |
| Carnivore | consumer that eats only animals |
| Consumer | organism that gets food by eating other organisms |
| Producer | organism that make its own food |
| Adaptation | a body or behavior that helps an animal survive in its environment |
| Instinct | a behavior that an animal knows how to do from birth that helps it survive |
| Camouflage | body covering that helps an animal blend in with its environment |
| Incomplete Metamorphosis | a change an insect goes through with three stages: egg, nymph, adult |
| Mimicry | resembling another species to protect an animal from predators |
| Inherited Trait | characteristics an offspring gets from its parents |
| Nonrenewable Resource | natural resources that take millions of years to replace |
| Geothermal | heat energy from inside the Earth |
| Decomposers | organisms that break down nutrients in dead plants and animals |
| Fossil Fuels | material that are burned for energy like coal, oil, and natural gas |
| Renewable Resources | natural resources that can be totally replaced or is always available naturally |
| Natural Gas | occurs deep beneath the earth's surface over an extended period of time from the remains of plants and animals |
| Coal | contains energy stored by plants hundreds of millions of years ago |
| Nuclear Energy (Uranium) | energy formed when the bonds of an atom are broken a part |
| Hydropower | energy from moving water |
| Solar Energy | the ultimate source of energy for all other energy sources and fuels we use today |
| Wind Energy | energy from moving air |
| Complete Metamorphosis | a change an insect goes through with four stages: egg, larvae, pupa, adult |
| Migration | movement of an animal from one place to another |
| Life Cycle | series of stages through which a living thing passes from the beginning of its life until its death |
| Ecosystem | all living things in a given area interacting with each other and also with the environment |
| Biosphere | the parts of land, sea, and atmosphere in which organisms are able to live |
