Uniformitarianism | The principle that states that the geological processes that operate today also operated in the past |
Erosion | The process of wearing down and carrying away rocks |
Weathering | The process that breaks down rocks and other substances. |
Mechanical Weathering | The type of weathering in which rock is physically broken down into smaller pieces |
Chemical Weathering | The process that breaks down rock through chemical changes |
Abrasion | The wearing away of rock by rock particles carried by water, ice, wind. or gravity |
Frost Wedging | When water seeps into cracks and them freezes causes the crack to widen |
Oxidation | When iron combines with oxygen in the presence of water |
Permeable | When the material is full of tiny connected air spaces that allow water to seep through it. |
Soil | The loose weathered material on Earth's surface |
Bedrock | The solid layer of rock beneath the soil |
Humus | The dark colored substance that forms as a plant and animals remain decay |
Fertility | The measure of how well the soil supports plant growth |
Loam | Soil that is made of of equal parts clay,sand, and silt |
pH Scale | The scale that measures acidity |
Soil Horizon | A layer of soil that differs in color |
Topsoil | A crumbly dark brown soil that is made up of a mixture of hummus, clay and other materials |
Subsoil | Soil that mainly consists of Clay and Rock |
Decomposer | Decomposers are the organisms that eat dead bodies |
Natural Resource | Anything in the environments humans can use |
Soil Conservation | The management of soil to prevent destruction |
Crop Rotation | When a farmer plants differents crops in a field each year |
Contour Plowing | When farmers plow their fields along the curves of a slope instead of in straight rows |
Conservation Plowing | Dead weeds and stalks of the previous year's harvest |
