Powers of the President study quide

TermDefinition
Treaty a diplomatic power that allows the president to make formal agreements with foreign nations; must be confirmed by a 2/3 vote in the senate
Executive Agreement a diplomatic power that allows the pres. to make agreements with leaders of foreign nations without senate approval ( should be based on already existing policies and agreements )
Veto the power to reject a law passed by congress
Pocket Veto if pres. does not sign a bill in 10 days it becomes law automatically
Appointment Power the ability to fill government positions
Executive Order the ability to direct how a law is carried out by issuing directions; not an official law but has the force of law, should be based on law passed by congeress
Pardon official forgiveness for committing a crime as a single individual
Amnesty official forgiveness for committing a crime as a group
Commutation to reduce the length or severity of a sentence for someone who has been convicted of a crime
Reprieve to delay the start of punishment/the sentence for someone who has been convicted of a crime
