Term | Definition |

Treaty | a diplomatic power that allows the president to make formal agreements with foreign nations; must be confirmed by a 2/3 vote in the senate |
Executive Agreement | a diplomatic power that allows the pres. to make agreements with leaders of foreign nations without senate approval ( should be based on already existing policies and agreements ) |
Veto | the power to reject a law passed by congress |
Pocket Veto | if pres. does not sign a bill in 10 days it becomes law automatically |
Appointment Power | the ability to fill government positions |
Executive Order | the ability to direct how a law is carried out by issuing directions; not an official law but has the force of law, should be based on law passed by congeress |
Pardon | official forgiveness for committing a crime as a single individual |
Amnesty | official forgiveness for committing a crime as a group |
Commutation | to reduce the length or severity of a sentence for someone who has been convicted of a crime |
Reprieve | to delay the start of punishment/the sentence for someone who has been convicted of a crime |
