Vocabulary for Summer 2017 computer class

TermDefinition
computer a device that can process and save information
hardware physical parts of a computer
system unit box that contains the computer's processor and memory (brain of the computer)
monitor contains the screen for the computer
keyboard used to type letters and numbers and to give the computer instructions
mouse used to point at, select, and open items on the screen
pointer (cursor) symbol on the screen that shows where the mouse is pointing
desktop computer computer that sits on a desk or table and must be plugged in for power
laptop small portable computer with monitor and keyboard attached
touchpad used on a laptop instead of a mouse, to control the computer
touchscreen touch or tap this screen to click or draw on it
tablet a one-unit computer that is flat and has a touchscreen
printer output device that can produce hard copies of documents or pictures
scanner input device that takes photos of documents and stores them in digital form
smartphone cell phone with a built-in computer
software instructions that tell the computer what to do (also called program or application)
hard drive long-term memory for the computer (can be internal or external)
cd/dvd drive used to play cds (music) or dvds (movies)
audio ports used to plug in headphones and microphones
usb ports square hole for hardware to plug into the computer (printers, flash drives, cameras, etc.)
