Who was Prince Henry? The nation's most enthusiastic supporter of the exploration, was the son of Portugal's king. He helped conquer the Muslim city of Ceuta in North Africa.
Who was Vasco de Gama? Portuguese explorer who began exploring the East African coast, in 1498, he reached the port of Calicut, on the southwestern coast of India.
Who was Bartolomeu Dias? Portuguese captain who ventured far down the coast of Africa until he and his crew reached the tip, he explored the southeast coast of Africa and then considered sailing to India.
What was the Treaty of Tordesillas? 1494 - Spain and Portugal signed this treaty in which they agreed to honor the line.
What was the Dutch East India Company? This company was richer and more powerful than England's company, he Dutch eventually drove out the English and established their dominance over the region.
Which event in the European exploration of the East is most significant? Prince Henry’s navigation school that could teach people to sail, and explore the open ocean
What role did the Renaissance play in launching the age of exploration? It led people to starting more trade routes, and to go out of their comfort zones into what they needed to do + led to new adventure and curiosity.
What was Prince Henry’s goal, and who actually achieved it? He wanted to explore land, earn wealth, and spread Christianity. Vasco de Gama actually achieved this goal. He ventured far down the coast of Africa until he and his crew reached the tip.
What European countries were competing for Asian trade during the age of exploration? Portugal, Spain, France, England, and the Netherlands were all competing for Asian trade
What did the Treaty of Tordesillas reveal about Europeans’ attitudes to non-European lands and peoples? It revealed that the non-Europeans were there to be conquered and exploited.
What were the motives behind European exploration in the 1400’s? The spread of Christianity, the thought of becoming famous, and gaining wealth for your country. (3 G’s)
In what ways did Europeans owe some of their sailing technology to other people? They got the magnetic compass from China, the astrolabe from the Muslim culture, and the triangular sails from the Arabic culture.
