Computer Basics
Peripheral and Storage Devices for IBCT Computer Basics Unit.
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Domain Name System (DNS) | A system that maps uniquely hierarchical user-friendly domain names to specific numerical IP addresses. |
Hardware | The physical components (machine, wires, etc.) that make up the system unit plus the peripheral devices connected to it. |
Input device | Enters data and commands into the computer (e.g., keyboard, mouse, touch screen, microphone, webcam, etc.). |
Internet | An electronic communications network that connects computer networks and organizational computer facilities around the world. |
Operating system | Software that acts as a "go between", allowing the user, computer hardware, and other software to communicate with each other (e.g., Windows 10, Mac OS, Chrome OS, iOS, etc.). |
Output device | Allows the user to view or listen to the data a computer processes (e.g., monitor, printer, headphones, speakers, etc.). |
Peripherals | Additional hardware that isn't necessary for a computer to function, but does enhance how the computer can be used. |
Software | Instructions or programs for controlling the computer. |
Storage device | External hardware used to store and retrieve data, such as a hard drive, flash drive, optical disk, or memory card. |
Uniform Resource Locator (URL) | The address of a specific website or file on the Internet. |
