Computer Basics

Peripheral and Storage Devices for IBCT Computer Basics Unit.

TermDefinition
Domain Name System (DNS) A system that maps uniquely hierarchical user-friendly domain names to specific numerical IP addresses.
Hardware The physical components (machine, wires, etc.) that make up the system unit plus the peripheral devices connected to it.
Input device Enters data and commands into the computer (e.g., keyboard, mouse, touch screen, microphone, webcam, etc.).
Internet An electronic communications network that connects computer networks and organizational computer facilities around the world.
Operating system Software that acts as a "go between", allowing the user, computer hardware, and other software to communicate with each other (e.g., Windows 10, Mac OS, Chrome OS, iOS, etc.).
Output device Allows the user to view or listen to the data a computer processes (e.g., monitor, printer, headphones, speakers, etc.).
Peripherals Additional hardware that isn't necessary for a computer to function, but does enhance how the computer can be used.
Software Instructions or programs for controlling the computer.
Storage device External hardware used to store and retrieve data, such as a hard drive, flash drive, optical disk, or memory card.
Uniform Resource Locator (URL) The address of a specific website or file on the Internet.
