TermDefinition
What are laws based on? Moral values, economic values, political values, and social values.
Where did the law come from? William the Conqueror
Common Law A set of laws that remains consistent.
3 Elements of Law Constitution, statutes, and administration law.
Precedents Court decisions that can be used for future cases.
Stare Decisis To stand on decided cases.
Adversary System Two parties are responsible for bringing facts to their case before a court, contest between opposing sides, and present their best arguments and show the weakness of the other side's case.
Plaintiffs Those who sue
Defendents Those being sued
Judge Neutral party
Jury A group of people chosen to decide question of fact in legal actions.
Mr. Jones vs Mr. Smith Plaintiff vs. Defendant
Criminal Law Involves a wrongly committed crime against society or the public. Ex. murder, rape, kidnap.
Civil Law Dealing with duties that exist between people or between people and their government. Ex. a car accident b/c of a missed stop sign, person will sue under civil law.
