Chapter 7- Membranes
Membrane Structure and Function
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is the function of phospolipids? | They maintain the barrier between the inside and outside of the cell by making up a phospolipid bilayer. |
What does it mean if a membrane is selectively permeable? | The membrane can choose or select which molecules it will let pass through the membrane. |
What is the diffusion of water also called? | Osmosis |
What happens when a cell is placed in a hypotonic solution? | Animal cells may swell and burst. Plant cells become turgid and pressurized. |
What type of transport does not use energy and works with the concentration gradient? | Passive transport |
What is the difference between exocytosis and endocytosis? | Exocytosis is removing large particles out of the cells (exiting) and endocytosis brings large particles into the cell. |
Besides osmosis what is another way that water can enter or leave the cell? | Aquaporins, which form a channel through the cell membrane. These are especially used in the cells of kidneys. |
What happens to a cell in a hypertonic solution? | Animal cells shrivel up and plant cells undergo plasmolysis (cell membrane pulls away from the cell wall). |
What is the difference between diffusion and facilitated diffusion? | Facilitated diffusion uses a transport protein to move the molecule across the membrane. In diffusion the molecule moves on its own. |
What are the two characteristics of active transport? | It uses energy and moves against the concentration gradient (from low to high) |
What type of solution will cause no change to the cell and water enters and leaves at an equal rate? | Isotonic |
What are the two main typed of endocytosis? | Phagocytosis- bringing in large substances "cellular eating" Pinocytosis- bringing in liquids and dissolved matterials "cellular drinking" |
What is the sodium-potassium pump an example of? | active trasport- exchanges sodium for potassium across cell membrane. Bringing the soduim from its higher concentration and pushing out the potassium to its lower concentration |
What is cotransport? | Moving one substance by transporting another- cell moves H+ protons out of the cell so it can move sucrose molecules into the cell. |
When a cell regulates its solute concentration and water balance what is it called? | Osmoregulation |
