Executive Branch Vocab

TermDefinition
Administration the officials in the executive branch of government under a particular chief executive.
Ambassador An accredited diplomat sent by a country as its official representative to a foreign country.
Biennial An event celebrated or taking place every two years
Budget allow or provide a particular amount of money
Bureaucracy a system of government in which most of the important decisions are made by state officials rather than by elected representatives.
Cabinet a body of advisers to the president, composed of the heads of the executive departments of the government.
Checks and balances counterbalancing influences by which an organization or system is regulated, typically those ensuring that political power is not concentrated in the hands of individuals or groups.
Commission A group of people, or planning board, appointed to a certain job by local government
commute reduce (a judicial sentence, especially a sentence of death) to one less severe
diplomacy The relations and communications carried out between countries
Electoral college a body of people representing the states of the US, who formally cast votes for the election of the president and vice president.
electors People who promise to cast votes for the candidates selected by voters
embassy the official residence or offices of an ambassador.
executive agencies a part of a government department that is treated as managerially and budgetarily separate, to carry-out some part of the executive functions of the United Kingdom government, Scottish Government, Welsh Government or Northern Ireland Executive.
executive departments The branch of federal and state government that is broadly responsible for implementing, supporting, and enforcing the laws made by the legislative branch and interpreted by the judicial branch.
fedralism The divison of powers between the states and the fedral government
government the governing body of a nation, state, or community.
impeach charge (the holder of a public office) with misconduct.
order of succession The United States presidential line of succession is the order in which persons may become or act as President of the United States if the incumbent President becomes incapacitated, dies, resigns, or is removed from office
pardon A pardon is a government decision to allow a person who has been convicted of a crime to be free and absolved of that conviction, as if they were never convicted
regulatory commission An independent agency responsible for regulating interstate oil and gas pipelines and sales, as well as the transmission of electricity from state to state.
reprieve a cancellation or postponement of a punishment.
state of the union The State of the Union address is an annual speech presented by the President of the United States to a joint session of the United States Congress, except in the first year of a new president's term
seperation of powers often imprecisely and metonymically used interchangeably with the trias politica principle, is a model for the governance of a state.
veto a constitutional right to reject a decision or proposal made by a law-making body.
