Vocabulary for Rocks

6th grade science vocabulary for rocks, minerals, and soil

TermDefinition
rock cycle The slow process by which old rocks are recycled into new rocks.
rock A naturally occurring solid mixture of minerals and organic matter.
texture The size, shape and position of the grains that make up a rock.
strata layers of rock
sediments Small grains and fragments of weathered rock.
metamorphic This type of rock forms deep in the earth as a result of extreme heat and pressure.
extrusive igneous rock This fine-grained rock forms as magma cools quickly on the surface.
erosion The process by which sediment is removed from its source.
deposition The process by which eroded sediment is laid down.
igneous Rock formed from cooled magma.
composition The chemical make-up of a rock.
sedimentary This type of rock forms as deposited sediment becomes compacted and cemented.
chemical weathering the breakdown of rock into smaller pieces by chemical means such as carbon dioxide dissolved in water
physical weathering the breakdown of rock into smaller pieces by physical means such as wind and water
intrusive igneous rock Forms as magma cools slowly within the Earth.
organic Living or alive at one time (plant/animal matter)
inorganic this type of material was never alive
