Gerrymandering | Drawing legislative districts' boundaries to give an unfair advantage to a particular group or party. |
Invisible Primary | Year before a presidential election where the potential presidential candidates raise funds, gather party support and attempt to capture media coverage. |
Frontloading | Practice of the states to move their primaries to the beginning of the year (Jan-Mar) to determine the front runners of the campaign. |
Swing States | Determine the outcome of the election; not solely Democrat or Republican |
Battleground States | Candidates spend lots of money and time in these states because the outcome is uncertain. |
Microtargeting | Focusing on a specific group to tailor political messages for them. |
Valence Issues | Non-controversial issues that have support among candidates regardless of parties. |
Position Issues | Controversial issues that demonstrate major differences among candidates. |
Retrospective Voting | Voting based on the past (records). |
Midterm Election | Every 2 years, when 1/3 of the Senate is up for re-election. |
Presidential Coattails | Impact that the presidential election has on the elections of congressmen. |
