Consumer Rights

TermDefinition
Consumer A person who buys goods and servicse for their own use.
Proof of purchase Shows that a consumer has paid for items.
Contract A legally binding agreement between two or more people.
Barcode A series of vertical lines that can be read by a scanner that give information about a product.
Guarantee/Warranty A written promise from a manufacturer to redress faulty goods within a given period.
Distance selling Sale and purchase of goods and services that does not take place in person.
Trade associations Represent businesses in a particular trade.
Office of the Ombudsman Investigates complaints from members of the public against public bodies.
Small claims District court judge listens to case, costs €25.
ASAI Promotes good advertising standards in Europe.
CCPC Investigates and enforces consumer and competition law.
CAI A voluntary advice and information service for consumers.
Infringed To break the terms of an agreement, rule or law.
Redress Compensation when rights are infringed - replace, refund, repair.
Competition Rivalry between the sellers of goods and services to win consumers' business.
