Differentiate acrocarpous moss from pleurocarpus moss. Acrocarpus do not have branches, and the sporophyte sticks straight up. Pleurocarpus have branches and the sporophyte grows out of the axil of a branch.
What is the genus of night's plume? Ptillium
What class and family does sphagmum belong to? Class Sphagnopsida, Family sphagnidae
How can a sphagmum be identified? By their pom pom capitulums
Where does the sporophyte of a sphagmum grow? on the capitulum
What kind of habitat does sphagmum grow in? Bogs and fens
What is peat moss? Sphagmum
How can you tell apart leafy liverwarts from mosses? Mosses have radial symmetry, their leaves have midribs, and they are multicellular. Liverwarts are bilateral, have no midrib, and are unicellular.

What is the botanical term for midrib? Costa
What is the genus of Reindeer lichen? Cladina
What are 6 common mosses of the forest floor? Dicranum polysetum, Hylocomium splendens, Pleurozium schreberi, Polytrichum commune, Ptillium crista-castrensis, and Mnium/Plagiomnium/Rhizomnium
How would you recognize Ptillium crista-castrensis? Pleurocarpus, fern-like, 3-10 cm tall
How can you easily recognize Hylocomium splendens? The branches are arranges as steps, with each step equating to one year
Differentiate between Mnium, Plagiomnium, and rhizomnium. Mnium- double tooth margin, toothed midrib Plagiomnium- single tooth margin, smooth midrib Rhizomnium- entire margin
