9th Civics Chapter 7 VOCABULARY

NOMINATION | The naming of those who will seek office. |
GENERAL ELECTION | Regularly scheduled elections at which voters make the final selection of office holders. |
CAUCUS | A group of like minded people who meet to select the candidates they will support in a upcoming election. |
DIRECT PRIMARY | Held within a party to pick that party's candidate for the general election. |
CLOSED PRIMARY | The party primary is closed to all but those party membership. |
RUNOFF PRIMARY | The top two vote getters face one another for the party nomination. |
PETITION | Candidates are nominated by petition singed by qualified voters in the election district. |
ABSENTEE VOTING | A process by which they can vote without going to their polling place. |
PRECINCT | is a voting district. |
POLLING PLACE | A place where the voters who live in a precinct |
BALLOT | is the device by which a voter registers a choice in an election |
OPEN PRIMARY | is a party's nominating election in which any qualified voter can cast a ballot |
BLANKET PRIMARY | "wide open primary" every voter received the same ballot - list every candidate regardless of party. |
POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEES (PAC) | are the political arms of special interest and other organizationions with a stake in electoral politics. |
HARD MONEY | money raised and spent to elect candidates for Congress and White House. |
SOFT MONEY | funds given to a party organization for "party building activities, candidate recruit, voter registration, and get-out-to-vote drives, etc. |
COATTAIL EFFECT | occurs which a candidate running for office at the top of the ballot helps attract voters to other candidates on the party ticket. |
