AP. Gov Unit 2 Vocab

TermDefinition
Natural Law Laws that are inherent by human nature such as Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness
Separation of Powers The breaking up of our Government into 3 seperate branches: Legislative, Executive, and Judicial
Checks and Balances The process by which the 3 branches of Government ensure that one branch does not become too powerful
Divided Government When different areas of the Government are controlled by various political parties
Direct Primary When citizens get to vote on every single issue; as was practiced in Ancient Greece
Initiative A petition signed by a certain number of registered voters to force a vote on an issue
Referendum When citizens are allowed to confirm that a vote of a city council that involves tax payer money
Recall Election When enough signatures are gained to force a local public official to leave office and to be replaced through the process of another election. This cannot be used on the President
Judicial Review The Supreme Court's authority to determine whether or not a law is constitutional
Writ of Mandamus Court Order demanding that a public official take action regarding an issue
Impeachment The act of the Congress to attempt to remove a President from office.
Executive Order Signed into law by the President, but never passed through the Congress, meaning the next President can easily overturn that law
Impoundment When the President choose not to spend money that the Congress has appropriated through the Federal Budget
