Democracy Government of the people, for the people, by the people, not ran by a single person
Direct Democracy Greek, every citizen votes on every issue
Representative Democracy People vote on representatives to vote and decide important issues for them
Constitutional Democracy Government power is obtained by winning free, fair, and frequent elections. Written set of Government rules. Government power is limited
Constitutionalism A Government that has Checks and Balances, Federalism, Separation of Powers, Rule of Law, and Due Process
Statism A political system in which the state has substantial centralized control over social and economic affairs
Popular Consent The idea that the Government is based on the will of the people
Majority Rule The principle that the greater number should exercise greater power

Ideology A system of ideas and ideals, especially one that forms the basis of economic or political theory and policy
Theocracy Government that is based on religion
Articles of Confederation (AOC) First Constitution of the United States, considered weak because it did not give enough power to the Federal Government. (Power to tax and sustain a military). Exploited by Shay's Rebellion
Annapolis Convention Meeting organized by Hamilton at a bar in Maryland to discuss the weaknesses of the AOC. Plans were made to scrap the AOC and to meet in Philadelphia to draft a new Constitution
Constitutional Convention Took place in Philadelphia when our Constitution was drafted
Shay's Rebellion An uprising of Revolutionary War veterans and farmers who rioted after their taxes were raised following the War. The MA militia was too weak to stop the uprising, showing the need for a national military
Bicameralism 2 House Legislature
VA Plan Government plan based on larger states having more representation in Congress, basis for the House of Representatives
NJ Plan Government plan based on state equality in Congress, basis for the Senate
Connecticut Plan / Great Compromise Combined the NJ and VA Plans to create Congress
3/5 Compromise Said every 5 slaves count as 3 citizens. Designed to prevent the south from obtaining too many pro-slavery representatives in the House.
Federalist Believed in a strong Federal Government. Lead by Alexander Hamilton
Anti-Federalist / Democratic Republicans Believed in a strong State Government. Lead by Thomas Jefferson
The Federalist Series of essays written by the Founding Fathers pushing for the ratification, and need for the Constitution as well as a strong Federal Goverment
