Key Terms 14-24 from Unit 2A

TermDefinition
Executive Branch Found in Article 2 of the Constitution, it is the branch of government, headed by the President, whose job is to enforce or “faithfully execute” the laws.
President The head of the executive branch whose job is to enforce the laws. This person is technically chosen by the Electoral College (based on popular vote) every 4 years.
Vice President This person is second in command to the President of the United States. They are elected on the same ticket. Constitutionally, this person is also head of the US Senate and acts as a tiebreaker vote.
Electoral College A group of 538 electors whose job is to officially select the President and VP of the United States after each state has cast its popular votes.
Pardon A power the President has where he/she can forgive someone for a federal crime.
Cabinet The heads of 15 major executive agencies who advise the President (Dept of State, Defense, Treasury, etc.) Technically, the VP is also a member.
Judicial Branch Found in Article 3 of the Constitution, this is the branch of government, headed by the Supreme Court, whose job is to interpret laws (which is NOT a power written in the Constitution)
US Supreme Court This is the only official court mentioned in the Constitution. They head the judicial branch.
interpretation Also known as “judicial review,” this is the ability of the court to determine what laws are constitutional or unconstitutional (legal or not legal)
Chief Justice The head of the Supreme Court
Impeach To accuse a President or federal judge of wrongdoing in an attempt to remove him or her from their position. The HOR is in charge of impeaching officials, but only a ⅔ vote of the Senate can remove them.
