COVERT- Processes

COVERT Minerals, Rocks, Rock cycle, Earth's Layers, Processes

TermDefinition
crystal has an orderly and definite pattern of atoms
cleavage a break resulting in smooth regular planes that reflect light
fracture broken into jagged rough edged peices
color can help you identify or classify rocks or minerals
streak a clue to help identify rock type
luster shiny, dull, pearly, light reflection, metalic, earthy
Moh's Hardness Scale a scale from 1-10 using fingernails, pennys, glass, steel, a streak plate, etc. to help identify minerals
specific gravity weight of an equal volume of water
gem rare and valuable minerals that are cut and polished with few blemishes, beautiful
ores useful substance, mined and sold for a profit
igneous melted rock from inside Earth that cools and hardens (type of rock)
extrusive igneous rock that exits the magma chamber as lava and cools rapidly with little or no crytals
intrusive igneous rock that cools inside the magma chamber and hardens slowly creating larger crystals.
sediment broken peices of rock, shells, minerals
sedimentary rock sediment hardened into layers, carried, dropped, deposited, by wind, ice, gravity, water (type of rock)
chemical rocks created when mineral rich water from geysers, salty lakes, hot springs, evaporates leaving deposits behind
biochemical rock sedimentary rock with deposits of once living organisms
grains individual peices of rock
texture size, shape and arrangement of grains
foliated metamorphic rocks that have a layered appearance, stripes or bands produced by heat and pressure
non-foliated metamorphic rock formed with low pressure and high temperatures with no indications of banded layers
metamorphic rock alteration (change) of the structure of the rock by heat or pressure (type of rock)
rock cycle a continuous change process undergone by rocks in the earth's crust
minerals inorganic solid materials found in nature having a definite chemical make up and orderly arrangement of atoms
Continental Drift continents moved slowly over time to their current locations
Plate Tectonics Earth's crust and part of the upper mantle are broken into sections known as plates which are part of the lithosphere, and float on the (plastic-like layer) asthenosphere.
Wegener's clues Alfred Wegener constructed his hypothesis about continental drift which was based on climate, rock, and fossil clues as well as the puzzle like fit of continents known as:
Earth's layers core (inner and outer), mantle (inner and outer) crust (asthenosphere, lithoshere, continental)
Constructive processes landforms building created from movement of material by landslides, earthquakes, volcanos, folding, deposition of sediment
Destructive processes landforms breaking down which is destroyed from carrying away of material by landslides, erosion, weathering,
Dichotomous Key a reference which one may use to classify by answering questions which lead to a clue to identify what one is looking for
Compaction particles of sediment stick together and are pressed and pressured with clay
Cementation binding together of particles of rock which are compacted and stick together
Pangea All landmasses as one continent

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
