nucleus | is the control center of the cell. It contains DNA. |
vacuole | acts like a stomach storing and breaking down materials. |
mitochondria | produces energy for the cell |
cellular respiration | the process by which cells get their energy. |
How does cell respiration work | cells take in oxygen and food (like sugar) and release carbon dioxide and water. |
Why are cell different shapes and sizes? | because they have different jobs to do. |
Red blood cells | small, smooth, flexible saucers because they need to move through blood vessels. |
Nerve cells | like the cells in your brain, have branch like structures so they can quickly send messages to all the parts of the body. |
skin cells | Flat cells that can be layered like shingles on a roof. |
Lung Cells | Cells with hair-like structures. The hairs help keep out dirt and bacteria. |
tissue | a group of cells that have the same job |
Organs | Tissues group together to form these. |
Organ system | Organs group together to form these. |
Organism | Organ systems form these. |
Do Plants have tissues and organs too? | Yes |
A leaf | an example of a plant organ. |
How do cells work together to form an organism? | Cell->tissue->organ->organ system->organism |
organ system | a group of organs working together to carry out life processes. |
muscle system | works with the skeletal system to move your body. The muscular system also works with your digestive system to help move food through the stomach and intestines. |
