Function | A function is an equation which shows the relationship between the input x and the output y and where there is exactly one output for each input. Another word for input is domain and for output the range. |
Relation | A relation is a relationship between sets of values. In math, the relation is between the x-values and y-values of ordered pairs. The set of all x-values is called the domain, and the set of all y-values is called the range. |
Independent Variable | variable (often denoted by x ) whose variation does not depend on that of another. |
Dependent Variable | variable (often denoted by y ) whose value depends on that of another. |
Domain | A function with a fraction with a variable in the denominator. To find the domain of this type of function, set the bottom equal to zero and exclude the x value you find when you solve the equation. A function with a variable inside a radical sign. |
Range | The difference between the lowest and highest values. |
Slope | In mathematics, the slope or gradient of a line is a number that describes both the direction and the steepness of the line. |
Y-Intercept | The equation of any straight line, called a linear equation, can be written as: y = mx + b, where m is the slope of the line and b is the y-intercept. The y-intercept of this line is the value of y at the point where the line crosses the y axis. |
Linear Equation | an equation between two variables that gives a straight line when plotted on a graph. |
