Sections 2: Life cycle
Term | Definition |

Agile | A family of development methodologies where requirements and solutions are developed iteratively throughout the life cycle. |
Project life cycle | The inter-related phases of a project, programme or portfolio that provides a structure for governing the progression of work. |
Phase | The major subdivision of a life cycle. |
Lessons learned | Documented experiences that can be used to improve the future management of projects, programmes and portfolios. |
Reviews | A review is a critical evaluation of a deliverable, business case or project management process. |
Concept | This establishes the need, problem or opportunity. An outline business case is prepared and high-level schedule. The feasibility is investigated and a solution identified. |
Definition | The preferred solution is refined, options investigated and the project management plan (PMP) produced and business case updated |
Development | The PMP is executed. This phase can be broken down into stages, if required |
Handover and closure | The outputs are delivered, handed over into operations, and the project completes with lessons being learned and a post-project review, as well as project team being disbanded |
PMP | Project Management Plan. A plan that brings together all of the plans for a project and acts as the reference document for managing the project |

Stage | A sub-division of the development phase of a project created to facilitate approval gates at suitable points in the life cycle |
