Pitch

This stack is all about pitch in music.

TermDefinition
Pitch This word describes how high or low something sounds
Melody Is a series of pitches combined with rhythm over a pulse (beat) to create a pattern.
Scale This is a progression of single pitches upwards or downwards in steps (from the Italian scala meaning stairway)
Pitch Contour This is the shape of a melody
Definite Pitch A sound or pitch where a listener can possibly identify the pitch and sing or play it back. All melodies are made of these.
Indefinite Pitch A sound or pitch that a listener finds impossible or relatively difficult to identify as to pitch e.g. Crash cymbals, clapping sticks etc
Harmony This word describes when two or more definite pitches are played at the same time.
Tonality This is the word used to describe the pitches used to make a piece of music and the main pitch it is based on. Music can have an emotional feel to it, the combination of pitches can make the listener feel a certain way.
Key Have you ever noticed a song can be song lower or higher? If you can do this you are changing the element. Two singers are never exactly the same so some singers like to sing lower while others like to sing higher. This element is also related to Tonality
Major This is a word used to describe the quality of the harmony. If a group of pitches sound brighter (or happier) then they most likely have this quality
Minor This is a word used to describe the quality of the harmony. If a group of pitches sound darker (or sadder) then they most likely have this quality
Consonant This word is used to describe harmony that is pleasing to listen to.
Disonant This word is used to describe harmony that is NOT pleasing to listen to. In fact it can sound quite harsh and horrible.
