VARIABLE | A symbol, usually a letter, used to represent a number (x=5, n=8, y=11 ) |
TERMS | Each part of an algebraic expression separated by a plus or minus sign 3(x+2 y ) = 3 x +6 y |
LIKE TERMS | Terms that contain the same variable(s) to the same power |
ORDER OF OPERATIONS | The rules that tell which operation to perform first when more than one operation is used |
DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY | To multiply a sum by a number, multiply each addend by the number outside the parentheses |
COEFFICIENT | The numerical factor of a term that contains a varible (3x+4y-2) |
EQUIVALENT EXPRESSIONS | Expressions that have the same value (5 x +3 y +2 x + 4 y) |
CONSTANT | A term without a variable 2 2 (3 x + 4 + 36 - 2 y) |
