Basic Operations & Concepts Unit

Random Access Memory Data storage that can be accessed randomly at any time, allowing quick access and manipulation
Read Only Memory Data storage that is firm or hardwired and cannot be easily altered or reprogrammed
Productivity Programs Applications dedicated to helping users accomplish specific jobs, like creating documents, presentations, charts & graphs, etc.
Educational Programs Applications whose primary purpose is teaching or self-learning
Communication programs Applications designed to pass information for one system to another
Entertainment Programs Software used for amusement, leisure, or as a diversion
bit the smallest unit of data in a computer
byte a group of binary digits or bits (usually eight) operated on as a unit
binary a numbering scheme in which there are only two possible values, 0 and 1
Computer Functions Input, Processing, Output, Storage (IPOS)
Computer Input The data a computer accepts (n); accepting the data a computer will process (v)
Input Devices Devices that facilitate computer input
Central Processing Unit The brain of the computer
Computer Processing Changing computer data (input) into meaningful information
Computer Program Instructions that a computer can understand and process
Computer Software Specialized programs designed with a user interface that allows the user to interact with the program & computer
User Interface The parts of a computer and its software that allow the user to interact with the machine and its program
Operating System A collection of software that manages computer hardware resources and provides common services for computer programs
Computer Output The information produced during computer processing (n); data that has been changed into meaningful information
Output Devices Devices that facilitate computer output
Computer Storage The media and methods used to keep computer information available for later use
Storage Devices Hardware used for storing processed computer data and computer information externally
Hardware The peripheral devices or computer equipment that the user can see and feel
Optical Disc (or Disk)​ an electronic data storage medium that can be written to and read from using a low-powered laser beam (transmitted from a laser head mounted on an optical disk drive)​
Flash Drive​ a portable storage device, often the size of a human thumb, that connects to a computer via a USB (universal serial bus) port​
Network Storage​ File-level storage on a server connected to a computer network that provides data access to a group of clients who share information and resources across devices​
Cloud Services​ Storage of data in online, or virtual, space that is generally hosted by third parties (like Microsoft for Office 365 cloud storage)​
RAM (stands for) Random Access Memory
ROM (stands for) Read Only Memory
