Rock Cycle

Earth Science Vocab

QuestionAnswer
Sedimentary rock Rock that forms when particles from other rocks or the remains of plants and animals are pressed and cemented together.
Igneous rock Rock that forms from the cooling of molten rock at or below the surface.
Rock cycle Series of processes in and on the Earth that slowly changes rock from one kind to another kind.
Lithosphere Solid, outer part of the Earth that includes the brittle upper portion of the mantle and the crust.
Conservation of Matter Matter cannot be created or destroyed in an isolated system, it can only be changed into different forms.
Metamorphic rock Rock that forms from an existing rock that is changed by heat, pressure, or chemical reactions.
Magma Molten rock that is stored inside the Earth.
Lava Molten rock that flows over the surface.
Sediment Small, solid pieces of material that comes from rocks or remains of organisms being broken down by weathering.
Weathering Process that breaks down rock and other substances into smaller particles and sediment.
Erosion Process by which water, ice, wind, or gravity moves weathered particles of rock and soil.
