What does Suyuan's name mean? Suyuan's name means "Long-Cherished Wish" written one way, and "Long-Held Grudge" written another.
What does Jing-mei mean? Jing means "pure essence" and mei means "younger sister", Jing-mei is her mother's long-cherished wishe...the essence of her sisters.

Why did Suyuan have to abandon everything on her way to fin her husband when she fled Kweilin during the war? Suyuan was horribly weak with dysentery.
What did she stuff into the twin girl babies shirts before she walked away to die? Before walking away to die, Suyuan stuffed valuables and information into each of their shirts, along with a note asking that someone take care of them and return them to her address in Shanghai.
Why did she abandon the twins? She had dysentery and did not was her babies to die with her.
When did Suyuan find out that her first husband had died? When Suyuan woke in the care of missionaries and when she reached Chingking, she found that her first husband was dead.
Who found An-mei's twin girl babies? A peasant woman named Mei-Ching who lived in a cave during the war with her husband and they cared for Chwun Yu and Chwun Ha.
Did anyone the peasant woman try to return the twins. Yes, after her husband died, but the address was now a factory and Suyuan and Canning had already left for America.
Who did Suyuan ask to help look for her twins? Over the years, Suyuan wrote to many old friends in China asking them to look for the twins.
What did Canning think caused An-mei's aneurysm? Canning thinks the possibility of the twins death,which he must have accidentally planted in her mind, grew until it killed her as an aneurysm.
How were the twins found? After Suyuan's death, her schoolmate happened upon the long-lost sisters by accident and gave them Suyuan's addressin San Francisco.
What did the twins do when they recognized her and Canning when they got to the Shanghai airport? They embrace.
What did they see in the polaroid Canning took of the three sisters together? As it develops, they see their mother's features come to life in their faces.
Did An-mei's "long-cherished wish" come true? Yes as the mother's features were seen in the polaroid of the three sisters.

What is the advantage of a double face with respect to a tiger? Just as a tiger's tow-colored stripes lets it stalk its prey unseen, a person can use her Chinese face in some situations and her American fact in others.
What does Lindo and Waverly see when they look in the mirror together? Not only their own faces, but all the past home of therir mothers and the future hopes of their daughters.
What are the meanings of "a Pair of tickets"? Chwun Yu and Chwun Hwas are themselves "a pair of tickets" in fulfiling Suyuan's wish, and in Jing-mei's heritage & relaitonship with Suyuan, and might need their own "pair of tickets" to get back to America,
What do the daughters' inherit? A sense of being Chinese that is special to them, each daughter's Chinese identity is as individual as the name her mother chose for her.
When does the climax come in the story? At the very end when Jing-mei meets the sisters amd understamds the point about shared spirit.
What is the climax? When Jing-mei understands her Mother, Suyuan's, deep wish to be able to pass on her legacy.
What is the continual theme? The continual theme: mothers and daughters in all generations are different "translations" of the same capable, compassionate andunbreakable spirit.
