Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography Endoscopic procedure including Xray fluoroscopy to examine the ducts of the LIVER, GALLBLADDER, BILIARY DUCTS & PANCREAS and may include use of instruments to obtain tissue samples, extract biliary stones & relieve obstructions
Endoscopic Ultrasonography Images produced using a sonographic transducer within an endoscope to evaluate abnormalities of the upper & lower GI tract & adjacent structures
Esophagogastroduodenscopy examination of the lining of the ESOPHAGUS, STOMACH & DUODENUM with a flexible endoscope for Dx & or therapeutic purposes such as biopsy, excision of lesions, removal of swallowed objects, dilation of obstructions, stent placement
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) a nonionizing imaging using magnetic fields & radiofrequency waves to visualize anatomic structures
Laparoscopy Examination of the abdominal cavity with a laparoscope for Dx purposes and/or to perform surgery
Lower GI Series Xray imaging of the colon after administiration of an enema containing a contrast medium
Needle Biopsy Percutaneous removal of tissue or fluid using a special hollow needle
Proctoscopy Examination of the rectum & anus using a proctoscope
Sigmoidoscopy Examination of the sigmoid colon with a ridig or flexible endoscope
Stool Culture & Sensitivity (C&S) Isolation of a stool specimen in a culture medium to identify Dz causing organisms & if organisms are present, the drugs to which thye are sensitive are listed
Stool Occult Blood Study Chemical test of a stool specimen to detect the presence of blood
Upper GI Series Xray of the ESOPHAGUS, STOMACH & DUODENUM after swallowing a contrast medium
Abdominal Paracentesis The passage into a cavity of a trocar and cannula, needle, or other hollow instrument for the purpose of removing fluid from the abdomen
Anal Fistulectomy Surgical correction of an abnormal passage from one epithelialized surface to another in the anal region
Anastomosis An operative union of two hollow or tubular structures created by surgery, trauma, or Dz between two or more normally separate spaces or organs
Antacid Any agent that reduces or neutralizes acidity, as of the gastric juice or any other secretion
Antiemetic A drug that prevents or stops vomiting
Antisposmodic A drug that decreases motility of the GI tract to arrest diarrhea or cramps
Appendectomy Surgical removal of the vermiform appendix
Bariatric Surgery Surgical procedures to the stomach or intestines in the Tx of morbid obesity by limiting the stomach capacity or causing malabsorption of food
Cathartic Drug that causes movement of the bowels, also known as a laxative
Cheiloplasty Repair of the lip
Cholecystectomy Surgical excision of the gall bladder
Colostomy Creation of an opening in the colon through the abdominal wall to create an abdominal anus
Esophageal Dilation The act of stretching or enlarging the opening of the lumen of the esophagus
Esophagoplasty Repair of the esophagus
Gastrectomy Partial or complete surgical removal of the stomach
Gastric Lavage Oral insertion of a tube into the stomach for examination & Tx
Gastric Resection Partial removal & repair of the stomach
Glossorrhapy Suturing repairof all or part of the tongue
Hemorrhoidectomy Surgical excision of hemorrhoids
Hepatic lobectomy Surgical excision of a lobe of the liver
Hernioplasty Surgical repair of a hernia
Ileostomy Surgical creation of an opening on the abdomen to which the end of the ileum is attached providing a passageway for ileal discharges
Laparotomy Surgical incision into the abdomen
Nasogastric Intubation (NG) Insertion of a tube through the NOSE & into the stomach for such purposes as to obtain gastric fluid specimen for analysis
Pancreatectomy Surgical excision of the pancreas
Polypectomy Surgical excision of a polyp
Proctoplasty Surgical repair of the anus & rectum
Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI) An agent that blocks the transport of hydrogen ions into the stomach & hence useful in the Tx of gastric hyperacidity, as observed in ulcer Dz.
