Caz ABD’nin güneyinde,1900’lerde gelişmeye başlamıştır. Afrikalı-Amerikalı ve Batı müziğinin harmanlanmasıdır. Müziğin dünya ile tanışması 1917 yılında Dixieland Jazz’in plaklarının piyasaya çıkmasıyla olmuştur.Atası Bluesdur.
Blues 400 yıllık geçmişi olan ve temeli Afrika’ya dayanan,müzik türüdür. 17. yüzyıldan itibaren Afrika’dan getirilen kölelerin tarlalarda çalışırken söyledikleri hüznü, umudu, özgürlüğü ve acıyı anlatan şarkılardan doğmuştur.Jazzin atasıdır.
Ragtime 1870'lerde ortaya çıkan ilk caz parçalarına deniliyordu.Ortaya çıktığı yer Missouri eyaletindeki Sedaila idi.Rag askeri marşların ve Afro-Amerikan Banjo müziğindeki ritimlerin bir arada kullanıldığı müziktir.İlk 1890’larda piyano için yazılmıştır.
Bebop Melodik bir yapıdan ziyade daha çok harmonik bir yapı üzerine kurulmuştur ve hızlı tempo ile doğaçlama (emprovizasyon) ile karakterize edilen caz türüdür. 1940'lı yılların başlarında ve ortalarında ortaya çıkmıştır.
Cool İngilizcede anlamı serin olmakla birlikte günlük dilde rahat,soğukkanlı gibi kavramların yerinede kullanılır.Caza girişi,Caz'da Bebop'a özgü sinirli,huzursuz ve gerilimli havanı, yerini yavaş yavaş daha rahat sakin ve dengeli bir üsluba bırakmasıyla oldu.
Swing 20. yüzyılın ilk yarısında meydana gelen türlü toplumsal felaketlere rağmen insanlara dansettirebilmeyi başarmış müzik türüdür.
