Force and Motion ADV

TermDefinition
Balanced Force Same sized forces acting in opposite directions. Results in no motion.
Drag Force of air friction slowing an object down.
Unbalanced Force When one force is greater in one direction. Results in motion of an object.
Buoyancy an upward force exerted by any fluid
Normal Force Any force perpendicular to the object that contacts it
Gravity A natural force of attraction of any two objects with mass
Friction The resistance of an object to its motion
Applied Force Any push or pull on an object
Resultant Net force with direction
Magnitude The size or extent of a force
Force Any Push or pull on an object
Newton The standard unit of measure used for force
Vector A quantity indicating direction and magnitude of a force. Typically shown with a line and arrow.
Inertia Newton's law that object's resist a change in motion.
Speed Distance Divided by Time
Velocity Speed with Direction
Motion Change of position of an object
Reference Point Object used to determine motion
Displacement The Measure of the change of position of an object from its original position.
Distance The measure of the space between two objects
Average Speed The average rate in a determined distance or time
Force Diagram A free body diagram showing the forces acting on an object
Kinetic friction The force of a solid moving opposite motion of another solid.
Net Force The total force acting on an object
Relative Velocity The velocity of an object in respect to another object.
Instantaneous Speed Speed of an object during a specific moment in time
