Term | Definition |
---|---|
Balanced Force | Same sized forces acting in opposite directions. Results in no motion. |
Drag | Force of air friction slowing an object down. |
Unbalanced Force | When one force is greater in one direction. Results in motion of an object. |
Buoyancy | an upward force exerted by any fluid |
Normal Force | Any force perpendicular to the object that contacts it |
Gravity | A natural force of attraction of any two objects with mass |
Friction | The resistance of an object to its motion |
Applied Force | Any push or pull on an object |
Resultant | Net force with direction |
Magnitude | The size or extent of a force |
Force | Any Push or pull on an object |
Newton | The standard unit of measure used for force |
Vector | A quantity indicating direction and magnitude of a force. Typically shown with a line and arrow. |
Inertia | Newton's law that object's resist a change in motion. |
Speed | Distance Divided by Time |
Velocity | Speed with Direction |
Motion | Change of position of an object |
Reference Point | Object used to determine motion |
Displacement | The Measure of the change of position of an object from its original position. |
Distance | The measure of the space between two objects |
Average Speed | The average rate in a determined distance or time |
Force Diagram | A free body diagram showing the forces acting on an object |
Kinetic friction | The force of a solid moving opposite motion of another solid. |
Net Force | The total force acting on an object |
Relative Velocity | The velocity of an object in respect to another object. |
Instantaneous Speed | Speed of an object during a specific moment in time |
