Define absolute poverty. | Unable to afford + not have food , clothing, warmth and shelter which are all basic living necessities. |
Define relative poverty. | How poor you are in comparison to the rest of society. People in this category can have basic necessities like housing. |
Who were the Undeserving poor? | People who lacked morality. Careless, lazy and drunk. Responsible for their own poverty. They'd get some help but it was designed to punish, to change their attitudes. |
What was the main concern about helping the poor (financially)? | They wouldn't bother to go to work because they'd not need to as receiving money. |
Booths circles of poverty. | Outer + widest = starving and homeless Middle - People that lived immoral + sinful lives - criminals. intermost - 'bread winner' = someone that earns money to support their family. |
The edge of poverty | People that worked and earned money, but employer could make anyone redundant. Or accident = no money poverty. Anyone can be poor. Circumstances can change. |
The inner circles of poverty | People live in slums. One = catrastophy 2. born into that life style. They had the worst jobs. inhabitants if booths inner circles of darkest England. |
Which people were considered as 'respectable workers'? | People in work earning who weren't living in the slums. Those with proper occupations. |
What was it like to be poor in 19th Century Britain? | Not fun. Housing often overcrowded. As of this people got ill. Also what you could eat was very limited. The wifes' house management skills were put to the test when trying to feed the family. No government support. Really had to fend for ones self. |
