Nervous System
terms and definitions
Question | Answer |
---|---|
afferent | the direction of neuronal impulses from the body toward the central nervous system |
autonomic | self-controlling or involuntary |
autonomic nervous system | division of the nervous system that controls the involuntary body functions, consists of sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions |
axon | the part of a nerve cell that conducts impulses away from a cell |
blood-brain barrier | a barrier formed by special characteristics of capillaries to prevent certain chemicals from moving to the brain |
cell body | the main part of a neuron from which axons and dendrites extend |
central nervous system | brain and spinal cord |
cerebrospinal fluid | a fluid that fills the ventricles of the brain and also lies in the spaces of the brain or spinal cord and the arachnoid layer of the meninges |
cervical | neck region |
dendrite | the part of a neuron that branches out to bring impulses to the cell body |
efferent | the conduction of electrical impulses away from the central nervous system to the body |
lumbar | the region of the back that includes the area between the ribs and the pelvis: the area around the waist |
monoamine oxidase | an enzyme found in the nerve terminals, the neurons, and liver cells: it inactivates chemicals such as tyramine, catecholamines, serotonin, and certain medications |
nerve terminal | the end portion of the newron where nerve impulses cause chemicals to be released: these cross a small space, called a synaptic cleft, to carry the impulse to another nueron |
neuron | the functional unit of the nervous system, which includes the cell body, dendrites, axon, and terminals |
parasympathetic nervous system | division of the autonomic nervous system that functions during restful situations: "breed or feed" part of the autonomic nervous system |
peripheral nervous system | the division of the nervous system outside the brain and spinal cord |
somatic | the motor nuerons that control voluntary actions of the skeletal muscles |
sympathetic nervous system | division of the autonomic nervous system that functions during stressful situations: "fight or flight" part of the autonomic nervous system |
thoracic | relates to the thorax area or the chest |
