Equations and Inequalities

TermDefinition
Equation A mathematical statement containing an equal sign.
Variable A letter or symbol that represents a quantity.
Expression A mathematical statement that may contain variables, numbers, grouping symbols, and operators.
Term A part of an algebraic expression that may be a number, variable, or product of both.
Coefficient A number that multiplies a variable.
Algebraic Expression A variable expression that contains at least one variable.
Solution The answer to a problem.
Inequality When two quantities or values are not equal.
Open Circle Symbol used to indicate the value is NOT included in the solution.
Closed Circle Symbol used to indicate the value is included in the solution.
> Greater Than.
< Less Than.
≥ Greater than or equal to. at least or the minimum
≤ Less than or equal to. at most or the maximum
