Week 6: Recruitment and Selection

QuestionAnswer
Definition of Recruitment Activities that aim to provide a pool of qualified candidates from which the successful candidate can be chosen aka. Advertising the job.
Definition of Selection The process that analyses and compares the candidates against the selection criteria.
Internal sources of candidates include: Internal promotions, advertising, lateral transfer e.g. job rotation and/or rehiring former staff
External sources of candidates include: Advertisements, educational institutions, social networking sites, agencies, employee referrals and online talent attraction.
Advantages of Internal Recruitment Aid morale, easier to assess applicant's ability, avoid 'leak plugging' strategy and less costs involved.
Disadvantages of Internal Recruitment Discontent among those not promoted, criticism from those outside the company, old culture maintained and cloning.
Advantages of External Recruitment New ideas, no claims of favouritism, forces insiders to compete and provides more diverse workforce.
Disadvantages of External Recruitment May not fit in, more training and development required, longer orientation period and can be very expensive.
Sources of information for selection Resume, interviews, background investigations, job based simulations and assessment centres
Factors that impact the effectiveness of interviews Expectancy effect, first impressions, candidate-order error, stereotypes and the halo and horns effect.
