backstage view | a tool that offers quick access to commands for performing may file management tasks all displayed in a single navigation pane that can be customized to meet users' needs. |
block style | this is a very common style for business documents because it has open and mixed punctuation and aligns all of the lettering on the left margin along with the date, inside address, salutation, body of the letter, closing, an signature. |
command | an instruction based on an action that you perform in Word by clicking a button or entering information into a command box. |
dialog box | displays additional options or information you can use to execute a command. |
dialog box launcher | a small arrow in the lower-right corner of the group. |
groups | collections of related Word commands. |
I-beam | what your cursor changes to when you are about to create text. |
insertion point | where you begin to create your text. |
menu | list of options that drop down that are associated with the command icons. |
mixed punctuation | requires a colon after the salutation and a comma after the closing. |
non printing characters | symbols for certain formatting commands in between words, such as paragraphs, indents and tabs, and spaces. |

word wrap | automatically wraps text to the next line as it reaches the right margin. |
mini toolbar | a small toolbar with popular commands that appears when you pint to a selected point. |
